That's what I've been told by a journalist who talks to hacks in Washington .. his position is becoming untenable .. resignation gives him a chance to get out before impeachment. It's actually in the press if you Google .. Trump is now isolated.

I don't see him resigning. You have to remember that he has a narcissistic personality and is always right, so those he sees as his enemies must, by definition, be wrong.

He sees himself as President by divine right; why would he resign?

I think he'll be dragged kicking and screaming out of The White House before resigning but either way it can't get here quick enough.

The alternative is Pence...
The thought of a Pence presidency terrifies me. 
He was brought in to appease the Republican base who were unsure of Trump (inexperienced, possibly atheistic, brash etc). Pence is a shrewd political operator & has some deeply worrying views. 

I'd almost rather keep Donald (Lame) Duck there. Isolated, unable to achieve anything and shouting into the void in his Twitter box than risk a much more savvy & effective Pence enacting HIS agenda and reinvigorating the Republican Party.

The Presidency is not an ongoing popularity contest.  As Obama demonstrated, it is perfectly possible to be a lame duck president for a whole term.  As Nixon demonstrated, the President can ignore those who don't like him. And as Eisenhower demonstrated, you can be a part-time President and let your staff run the show.

We can get rid of our Prime Minister through persuading their Party to ditch them. The Presidency is very different indeed.  It is protected against such action by the Constitution.  By all means say you wish Trump would go, but it is fictional nonsense that the guy will get booted from the White House just because he's disliked.

I expect that the Republican game plan is to get rid of Trump and install Pence - who would never have been elected in his own right. They will want to do it at a time when the public mood has really turned against Trump - so probably after some catastrophic screw-up, much bigger than we've seen yet - and with a bit less time to go until the next election, so Pence gets the benefit of being fresh, and wins easily. So they won't push him yet.

Given that I would rather see him serve out his term too.
