  • The family name should open doors but it could also create an almighty burden of expectation on the guy.

Wierd two finger technique he's got there. Seems to limit his scope alot.

  • That sort of playing with fast widdly notes just sounds a mess, not much feel or emotion coming through for me.

  •  Not my cup of tea, but it's his tribute to his dad so I'm not going to say negative things about it.
I will look for his name if/when he does anything else.

There's a human character to it that I like and it has a certain raw attitude. At first I wasn't sure about the vibrato, which is faster combined with too low an amplitude for my usual taste, but then I went back and checked some Gary Moore and it seems in the right zone. It grew on me after a few listens.
    It's not a competition.

I liked it. Nothing wrong with his playing.

Bloke plays a piece in tribute to his dead dad - The Fretboard says it has no feel or emotion because he plays a few quick passages. Classic :)

Yup because I didn't like it. Doesn't matter if it's a tribute to his dad or not, I'm not going to say it's wonderful just because of that.

It strikes me that Gary Moore did a lot of that widdly stuff with wild abandon in his younger days.  So a touch of it in a tribute to him seems fitting enough.

    Pretty much this ^^
so if you fancy a reissue of a guitar they never made in a colour they never used then it probably isn't too overpriced.

  • Gary Moore played a varying range of styles. After playing with Thin Lizzy, he played 'widdly stuff' (very well and in context IMHO, jazz fusion with Collisseum II, then mainly blues, with a diversion into rock along the way. If his son has inherited some of his skills, then it is a good legacy to pass on. I agree that expectations would be high, but hopefully he'll be judged on his own musicality.

I was just highlighting that "feel" and "emotion" in a guitar playing context are just wishy-washy terms for saying whether you like it or not, while trying to make it sound objective. You can add "taste" to that as well

Actually I loved his 'metal' period

    Murder in the Skies
    Led Clones
    etc.

    Brilliant playing.

I was thinking of the really early stuff like this.  Taste, subtlety and restraint are all conspicuous by their absence, and it makes me smile a lot.  Great fun...
