get a couple of snes clone usb controllers off ebay. They're a useful start with retropie.
When you get to wanting to build your own arcade controllers I'll get back to you :)
Which ones did you get?  I have a Buffalo one and it's fantastic.

I was confused by the lack of mince in mine. Or raspberries for that matter.

Got DOSBox on it. Got Leisure Suit Larry 1 on it.

So, LSL + Big TV = retro heaven

    That's awesome!

I setup my Raspberry Pi 3 with the latest version of RetroPie on Saturday and then wasted away the rest of the weekend playing Super Mario 3, A Link To The Past and Donkey Kong Country.  Either I'm not as good at 2d platformers as I used to be or the controls are a little off - I've seen a few reports that using a modern flat screen TV effects the input latency.

there can be a few milliseconds of lag either on the actual emulator as well sometimes as far as I know.

The lag is pretty much unnoticeable. Put it this way, The new SNES mini is running an emulator in exactly the same way as Retropie is. It's more likely that you're playing a 60Hz NTSC version which will feel different and that you're not as good as you used to be :)
Shot through the heart, and you’re to blame, you give love a bad name. Not to mention archery tuition.

I've got one sitting right next to me - it was great as a media centre for a long time, but somewhat hamstrung by not being able to properly support the main streaming services. Now that we've got a Samsung Smart TV, it's totally redundant and is thus sitting there doing nothing.

I can't run it as a NAS rig because it only supports USB 2.0 and 10/100 Ethernet, and it's no good as a database server for development because of the slow storage and limited CPU grunt.

It's a bit frustrating really, because it's a great idea in principle...they just haven't kept up with the times.
Have you tried a Pi 3 Model b?
Nope - the only real difference for me is the extra RAM (which doesn't fix any of my problems) and the quad-core CPU. It still has the limited storage and network bandwidth, and all the I/O is still going through a single shared bus. To be useful to me, it really needs USB 3.0 and GigE on separate buses.
Methinks you aren't going to get that right now for £30

    ;)

However, I can imagine that being a possibility with the next iteration or the one after that.
The RPi was designed as an educational toy.  The fact that people can do some fantastic stuff with them and make all kinds of gadgets and home and not-so-home appliances with them is great and all, but remember what the original point was.
I struggle to get time and inspiration for mine.  One day I will do something with it.
    Try the Es(Pi)resso .

How easy is it to change case?

I purchased my RetroPie machine ready built and pre configured plug n play but the no power button is annoying.

I love how good the PS4 controllers work with it, absolutely flawless

Ta, might look at this then. How long was delivery?

Spent the last few days updating my Pi and loading some new games (PS1), along with finally pairing my PS3 controllers (Which work seemlessly). So a power button would be an absolute winner.

  • i'm spectacularly shit at all things computer, my brain is divergent not convergent so maybe i'm just not suited to that mentality, but Raspberry PI and Aduino are two things i have been meaning to try for years purely because of things below.

i'm not so lazy i can't be arsed to open a door or turn on the heating myself (get on up like a flab machine, you lazy bastards!)... but i need this stuff.

link to the electrosmash guitar thing here if people want to find out more.

They ran out of stock when I ordered mine (saw it on HotDeals), so took a while to dispatch, around a week and a half from dispatch I think :)
