North West - Satellite photos

What's Hot

Anyone from Blackburn, Preston, Morecambe etc might like to see this.

A satellite photo in stupid high resolution downloadable from here (be warned the high res is over 170 MB):

http://www.esa.int/spaceinimages/Images/2017/09/Northwest_England

Also a short video version here:

http://www.esa.int/spaceinvideos/Videos/2017/09/Earth_from_Space_Northwest_England

(I'm a space geek so I check the ESA's site regularly. Shouldn't have said that; thread will probably get hijacked by Brexit arguers now.)

I'm on there somewhere, but the city of Lancaster isn't on the coast like they say.

Yep the ESA are pretty good on most things but don't know much about UK geography for some reason :)

Being from The 'Burn, it looks a lot better from distance than up close. Up close its eye wateringly grim in parts.

  • It's precisely precisely what I imagine the north looks like - a big brown turd-like patch in amongst the greenery.

I agree entirely, also being from the 'Burn
    My trading feedback

is it crazy how saying sentences backwards creates backwards sentences saying how crazy it is?

A view from a satellite is as close to Morecambe as anyone needs to be sadly.

They turn out every Wednesday in Morecambe, to watch the traffic lights change.

Colne!! Ouch, now there is a pit.

I love my homeland - the countryside is stunning, and the people are ace. But the major towns are mostly horrible.

    @bloodandtears

wow, fancy that eh? Whereabouts? I hail from Lammack, but I left over 20 years ago. Still have family in the RIbble Valley, which is where most of us came from.

I remember morecambe in the 70s as being quite the caravannimg hotspot. Looks like a closed down desolate junkie filled death hole now.

I remember Morecambe in the 80s as being a closing down, desolate, piss-head filled death hole.

    It was grim back then.

But then a load of ££s got spent .... and apparently had no good effect.
Having trouble posting images here?  This might help.

@Snap ; Lower Darwen.. not as grim as Blackburn... not as posh as Ribble Valley..

Lower Darwen - not as grim as Darwen either!

I had a summer job in 1989 at Orchard Mill, ICI on the road into Darwen. making perspex.

  • Why on earth would anyone want a pic of the North West? Does anyone live there? I don't even know where it is. I get headaches and nosebleeds if I travel north of Leicester, it's all smoggy, cold, rainy and the people all speak funny and are very tight with their money.

    Ahhhh Morecambe.

Frontierland used to be great as a kid, as was the laser quest place.

The illuminations weren't really up to much.

The rest of it is on a par with Rhyl

I'm assuming promenade music is still there though

God there's a harsh bit of anti-Northern prejudice going on here. (joke)

I just thought I'd pop up the picture so  someone could say "I can see our 'ouse from 'ere."

As for that area, we had relatives in Blackburn and I visited Blackburn and Morecambe many times as a kid. It's a rockin' place. You lot need to put aside your canapés and your expensive replica guitars and learn to enjoy chips and seaside rock again!

  • I can see my mother in law's house. Yup, that's definitely there. Does that count as a visit?
Shot through the heart, and you’re to blame, you give love a bad name. Not to mention archery tuition.
