a quiet/low-gain preamp valve?

just got a lovely worn in 1994 fender pro junior.. has a little bit of hum but this changes dramatically on the v1 tube
tried an ecc83/12ax7 but want a 12at7 (if thats the lower gain version) to see what happens...

    As its an early one, just check that the top middle screw which holds the back on is not touching the pot and causing the hum. Some of them were too long, back it all the way out with it running to check.
