When playing 'wrong' is just so right: Jim Mullen

What's Hot
An inspiring Guitarist interview with Jim Mullen.
One of my all time favourite players and a torch for playing jazz on Telecasters in his earlier days.
His technique is supposedly all wrong as he had no frame of reference when starting out, but still managed to become a master of his craft.
I've been a fan of his for years. He's so down to earth and so humble but is truly a jazz legend.

nice workman like interview - no flowery nonsense
the ‘folk’ tune he plays at the end is
Mná na h-Éireann (Women Of Ireland)
    here it is -

met him at north wales jazz , lovely bloke, funny too ... great player and that thumb technique looks so awkward but so effective , also he probably puts the most quotes in a tune of any guitarist ...

    this was fun ...

  • In the late 70s, Jim was one of the original two guitarists in Kokomo (Neil Hubbard was the other one). What a classy band that was, with some great guitar work. Nile Rogers may have been listening...

You Iucky person!  loved Morrissey Mullen but sadly never to to see them live.
I've got all their early albums. 'Life On The Wire' is one of my all time favourites, so many good songs on that album and Carol Kenyan's vocals were just breathtaking.

  • I saw Jim at the 'Band' in M/cr at the time of 'Thumbs Up'  brilliant.
Apparently his thing at the moment is playing to audiences in old folks homes, good on him......

  • Yes, I loved Morrissey Mullen too. Tessa Nile’s used to sing with them, she used to be one of this country’s most in demand session singers.

I only just got a chance to play that recording @equalsql. What a great album that was. Brilliant vocals from Carol Kenyon that evoked memories of Esther Satterfield's work with Chuck Mangione. On this track Jim Mullen's guitar nods to the playing of the wonderful Johnny Watson. What a great player Jim Mullen has been over the years, and still is. Excellent.
