First Partscaster (Tele)

What's Hot
Thought I'd document this here and maybe have somewhere to come when I inevitably run into issues!
Parts list:
2pc Swamp Ash routed, unfinished body (from Jamesguitarparts on ebay),
Hosco Solid maple unfinished neck (C shape, heel adjust, medium jumbo frets),
Seymore Duncan Quarter Pound pickups,
Gotoh vintage bridge & staggered non locking tuners,
Graphtech Tusq XL nut,
Various bits of nickle shiny bits and a couple of brass knobs!

I intend to do a TruOil finish over a dyed sunburst (ColorTone vintage amber and tobacco) with a dark (ebony) grain fill. If it looks anything like the below I'll call it a good job!

Some parts have arrived, next step is to give the body a few comfort cuts (belly, arm and neck).

It took me a while of looking at the first photo to realise i was your mock-up rather than just a photo you'd found - I was amazed that the grain on your guitar was so similar!!
I think it's going to look great :-)

Haha, thanks - it is indeed a photoshop!
Just reading through the forum and I found this gem in the 'Fun idea: forum designed guitar' thread:

    In the headstock, naturally...

    Which is really tempting...

    Go for it!

I managed to get a few solid hours on this yesterday with no wife/child around.
Cut out for truss rod added:

Comfort cuts- arm, belly and neck:

Then lathered on ebony grain filler - pretty much all of this will be sanded back off leaving nice dark grain fill in the deepest areas which in theory should give the look you see on really old flooring etc.

Like this (hopefully) as a base for the burst on top:

    Fingers crossed...

    As it now stands:

It gives a real 3D effect, under oil it would really pop - it's tempting to just oil over it as is but I know I'd regret it...

I've also rolled the edges of the fretboard so I'll need to start getting some oil on that soon (I've decided not to stain the neck)

I was expecting to see the neck carve on the other side of the heel - that's where I would look to lose some wood on a tele body. Very much dependent on personal style when you're playing up that end, I guess!

Do you mean on the upper bout or the front? There is a slight lead in on the upper but I wanted to keep the Tele look on the front as much as possible - so no cutting the pickguard.
Now I'm questioning whether I want more of a cut on the upper...

Ah yes sorry, I meant the upper bout, not the front.

Yeah, I wouldn't want to carve out the top either for aesthetic reasons.

I guess I meant  like this - which is simply something that might suit me - I'm not criticising or suggesting you change your plans at all :)

After having a feel with the neck on I've decided not to add the upper cut, we'll see if I regret it!
Dye should arrive today so I might try my hand at it tonight...

I'm really pleased so far - need to see how it dries and how the oil looks on top.
Some really interesting medullary rays started to pop out too:

FWIW I saw this in person yesterday and it looks even better in the flesh.  Tidy work.

Perhaps the last coat of oil, needs flattening and buffing still but will need to harden for a while before that.
