Car guru? Engine management code - English translation please?

What's Hot
Got the dreaded yellow light of impending doom yesterday. Car doesn't feel any different. Clearing the code works but it comes straight back. I'm guessing it's a loose wire but no idea where to look.

It's a 2010 Mazda6 TS2 2.2

Crankshaft! Interference engine? I'd say that it sounds sufficiently serious enough to not ask random blokes on the Internet and instead to get it to Mazda or a Mazda-specialist indie.

Hope it is as simple as a detached wire! :-/

I'm absolutely taking it in, I'm just trying to work out if it's safe to use in the mean time. My car is critical to my job so if I don't have it, I have to take a day off unpaid. (I'm currently on supply)

Sounds like it's telling you that it detects that the crankshaft and camshaft are out of sync (ie the camchain has stretched/is about to break)
If that's true it needs looked at immediately.
The Mazda 2.2 diesel had a recall for camchain stretch, I believe 2010 cars were affected.

I'd get it looked at ASAP, and don't drive the car in the interim.

I had the timing chain replaced under warranty a couple of years back because it had stretched. I'd be very surprised if they put another stretchy one on.

    I wouldn't!

It took BMW 3 attempts to get the camchain tensioner sorted on the N47 engine.

There's a possibility that the sensor itself has failed.

I once had a Vectra and the bloddy things were the most unreliable part on the car, at least until the cam belt let go on the motorway!

    If you buy a Poxhall....

I had one as a courtesy car the other week.  Didn't like it.

I got rid of one a year ago, and so far have been happy with its replacement (not-a--Poxhall)
"Working" software has only unobserved bugs. (Parroty Error: Pieces of Nine! Pieces of Nine!)

This. That's exactly what I'd expect to see from a "stretched"* cam chain.

    * they don't really stretch, they wear, but the expression seems to be infuriatingly sticky.

If they wear like bike chains, then the rivets wear so the chain as a whole does actually stretch.  It then doesn't sit nicely on the sprocket so that wears more quickly too.

  • Well if that's the case I'm fucked. It was done under warranty last time...but would have cost £1500. If it's gone again 2 years and 30k miles later they can fuck right off for £1500.

Ultimately, that code refers to a crankshaft/camshaft synchronisation problem, however it could be caused by a sensor fault, sensor ring fault, wiring fault, or a mechanical fault.
Some engines will store that fault whenever the engine is not running, which good diagnostic kit will know to ignore, whereas cheap code readers won't. Cheap code readers will also often not show all stored faults, plus they generally won't read faults in any other modules.

As for your specific vehicle, I can't even remember the last time I was in a Mazda, let alone worked on one, so can't give you much advice.
Was the timing chain kit fitted a genuine one?
We're currently in the process of redoing a lot of chains on transits, after our bean counters decided they could save some money by using aftermarket kits. Shortest life span so far is 7'000 miles.
