To be fair - he turned up to an interview, they stuck a recorder on the desk and he had to say something.

It's just an interview, and some of the lines in the interview are probably not even his considered opinion.

He's probably right for now, certainly in terms of the mainstream.  But surely there'll be some kind of retro guitar revival at some point.  Fingers crossed.
It's definitely only relevant to mainstream pop. Thankfully the naff pop-punk influenced pop like 5sos doesn't seem to be a thing any more.

There are still bands around primarily using guitar although it is more riff based - Slaves and Royal Blood seem to be doing fine

They're both duos though, and Royal blood doesn't even have a guitarist.

    I blame the lizards.

I believe Matt has stated he doesn't believe in the lizards any more.

    Translation: is off acid.

Self-tuning guitars! That's what the people need! We'll make a fortune!

They've been saying that since the sixties
Yep, that's what they told me when I had to go to accordion lessons in the 60s.

Yes, but its worked as a bunch of middle-aged guys are sat discussing it.

It proves what Tony Wilson said - it doesn't matter what they are saying about you, as long as they are talking about you.

I couldn’t find any mention of the guitar being ‘dead’ in the article and as such this thread title is a bit misleading. FWIW I can’t find much to disagree with Matt about in that piece.

I love Muse, but Matt is a bit of a tit sometimes.

It is a bit of a habit with big bands though, what he is really saying is "for me guitar is about rhythm and texture not squealy solos" and it comes across as "for everyone guitar is no longer about squealy solos"
I bet he only says that because he's a rhythm player and can't do squealy solos

    WTF?!?!

I assume he's not familiar with the back catalogue of Long Players from The Muse.

Yet their most popular albums are the ones with guitar as the lead instrument.
Most people I know couldn't even name a recent Muse song. I definitely can't.

I can't stand muse so couldn't give a shit what he says

I have put a rug in his £10 million pound house though so I don't think he cares that much tbh

It's no "Knights of Cydonia" but its not bad.

It can only be a good thing if it stops you lot from obsessing over pickups, strings, valves and cables.

The guitar is so dead that if you visit a festival this year, you will notice that appx. 90% of bands will be using them.

    But dead, yeah.  s

Such a narcissist that he thinks the musical direction he's interested in at the moment somehow applies to everyone in general.

OP is spot on for pointing out that 808s are far from something new
