I just played Pavarotti's classic 1972 performance of Nessun Dorma from Puccini's Turandot pretty loud though my nearfield monitors and have to admit I welled up a little.

It's a truly astonishing performance captured live at London's King's Hall with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and John Alldis Choir. The power and emotion in his voice is breathtaking. What a joy to listen to this again. With the Mics at some distance how f*cking loud is he?

"Rack 'em up Joey" LOUD!

If you don't like that then you are dead in your soul.

Fantastic but unfortunately I always get an image of tearful Gazza in my head when I hear that.

    Tremendous.

Whenever I hear it, I also always think of this (unexpected) version:

Aretha's version isn't technically a patch on Pavarotti, but there's still a few hairs on the back of the arms moments.

My dad is now spinning in his grave. He was an opera buff and would tell anyone who’d listen that it was  Beniamino Gigli. He saw him when he came over to England in the 40s or 50s. Gigli was an old man by then and had lost some of the power he’d had but my dad always said that listening to him that night was almost a religious experience.

Said this before on here but we had Nessun Dorma played at the old man’s funeral. I can’t listen to it anymore without choking up.

This is my fave version, the way he holds the note on the second run through is superhuman and very emotional -
