Monitor output questions (Mackie desk)

Following on from my IEM thread (Thanks for the responses BTW - got the LD 1000 set with some ZST earphones), my three-piece band are trying to figure out how we can now get three separate monitor mixes.... when the desk only has 2 aux out (these are the monitor outs).

We're using a Mackie CFX12 MK2 desk, and we each use in ears now. The desk has 2 aux out sends, with each channel being adjustable through these aux outs.

My guitar is via a Fractal AX8, using 2 cabs as backline, but I have a feed into the desk (with the FoH volume down on this channel) so that we can get it in monitor. Bass is also the same, but DI output into it's own channel.

It has something called 'SUB out' which seems to allow you to assign each channel to sub group 1-2 or 3-4.... which would be OK, but it only comes through if the channel slider is raised (which we don't want for guitar and bass!).

So, in a nutshell - is there a way to get 3 seperate 'monitor' outputs from this? Or anything else we should do that would be better?

Not really the right desk for anything more than very basic monitor mixes. You could assign what you want to hear in your ears to SUB groups 1&2 then press the button so the groups aren't going to the main left and right. In this manner you can choose what instrument you want to go to your mix but not the amount of each instrument as the sub group is post fader

There are other ways to use the inserts and another small mixer to achieve seperate mixes but it the real anwser is to get something modern and digital but cheapish like an X18, DL1608 etc .... digital mixers come with more aux sends and IEM mix control via your phone

No offence but it does make to smile when a band has got 2K worth of guitar backline and £200 worth of mixer :)

  • If you route the channel through the sub group and not to LR then you can raise thefader for the signal on the channel without it getting louder in FOH, the subgroup you are using will also have to be taken out of the FOH mix, the buttons are labelledLR on the channels
