"...but I can't afford the asking price. Would you accept * comes out with a number 20% less than the listed price which is already below market value*

I'm bored of these. Someone else give me the answer and I'll copy and paste it to him.

What do you expect when you try and sell something? It's pretty rare that people just pay an asking price for a private sale

    "No thanks".

Just keep it polite- there is no sense in saying anything else.

Don't get worked up about it. I've had someone on fleabay twice offer me 40% of my asking price as a buy it now. Just politely say "no thanks"

I don't mind haggling. That's normal and expected.

It's when people say "I can't afford it" it pisses me off.

I can't afford the Aston Martin I want, that doesn't make it their problem.

Besides, we all know it'll resurface in a weeks time at 20% more than my original price.

I get this pretty much all the time and yet, when buying from someone else on the forum, and the asking price is good, I usually give the asking price.

Is something wrong with me?  :s

How about "you can have it for" and then 20% over the original price?

If its OK for them to haggle down, it's OK for you to haggle up.

  • I'm thinking about drawing up a contract that says if he sells it on in the next year I get 50% off the proceeds. Like footballers

Then you should have marked up your item by 20% and happily snapped his hand off at a 20% discount.

Ive been on the forum about a year, I bought a White strat and an amp from two of my fellow forum members here, both were priced fairly, and would never ask for more discount, both were top blokes to deal with too, and if I sold either Would sell for the price I paid. [edit] and would offer them for sale here.

I had an email tonight asking if I’d take £450 for a guitar I have listed at £645 on gumtree.  I didn’t even bother replying.  I don’t mind haggling but that’s taking the piss and I’m in no rush to sell I’d rather hold onto it or wait until I’m offered a figure close enough to what I want.

The ‘I can’t afford it’ excuse is great isn’t it? Why does that mean I have assist you by dropping the price to suit your budget? I’m all for doing a deal - but when someone wants me to take it without lubrication - it’s a ‘no’ from me....
