If it was Burl the analogy would be perfect. Random growths and all that 


it is a fungal infection in the tree.  Go too far and the wood has the consistency of sponge.  You often see the tell tale black lines in storm damaged trees

almost all wood figure is a defect.  Flame is likely from stress to the sapling that gets recreated in each following ring.  Quilt is a genetic defect
