Apparently Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend are forming a new touring band called "The Whotles".

Can't wait to hear it. I've loved ABBA since I was 8...

Great if they can match or even get close to the quality of their earlier material but I suspect the probability of that happening is poor.  Nice to be proved wrong though.

Then why'd you bother clicking on the thread and posting?

The fact you bothered shows interest right there!

    C'mon, you're a closet ABBA fan, really, aren't you?  ;)

Listen to the tone of those vocals. I could just imagine Agnetha fronting a scandanvian Symphonic heavy rock bands

    dressed appropriately of course too

I grew up to hearing ABBA songs as a stream of chart hits for their 10 years at the top. Dont think they ever made a duff song.

And their songs mark the passing of a different era, and watching a few minutes of the video posted by proggy above brings back memories.

Strange, but whilst i wouldnt go out and buy their stuff now or go to see them live if they tour, i would be happy to stay in the car if ABBA were playing on the radio before getting out at the end of the song.

Am i really that fussed they're reforming? No. Suprised? Definitely, especially as they had the chance of doing it for money a while back. So why now? Mamma Mia must have earnt them a fair chunk - both the film and the theatre stage show. Why? They're getting on a bit. So again why do it?

Could it be the simple drive and thrill of making music?

One thing I’m certain of is that it’s not for the money. They’re all very wealthy, don’t seem to live excessive lifestyles, and have already turned down large offers to reform in the past.

I’m not expecting another Winner Takes It All or Dancing Queen, but I doubt they would release anything if they didn’t think it was at least passable.

They'll be touring as avatars. If the project had been yet another rehash of existing material it might have been seen as going to the well once too often. Releasing new material puts a different spin on it. Their final single was one of their best imo and showed a new side of the band so there's no denying that they could come up with something that's genuinely exciting.

Good band. I wasn't into their brand of pop at the time, but in retrospect it was well written, well produced, well recorded and well played. Good luck to 'em. (I assume their pension pots have run out hence they need another tour?)

EDIT if they needed another sideman guitarist I'd be up for it!
