Purely cosmetic yes,but gives a defined place to make the transistion from stripped neck to painted headstock.

As recommended above... try to get hold of a bottle of Virtuoso cleaner.

It's amazing stuff. It will not damage nitro, but it spirited away the ancient gunky heel build-up on my 330 when nothing else would.
I don’t know what they put in it but it’s miracle stuff..

    Great decision

BTW I've found Virtuoso cleaner responds well to a certain technique...

Wrap one finger in a clean cotton cloth, only use a couple of drops from the bottle onto the finish itself, and work on a very small area. Polish round and round in small circles. After a minute a kind of slurry will form which gets progressively harder and harder to work, but don't stop... keep going. After a couple of minutes a shine will break through, but the cloth will squeak and grab in a few places. Keep going even longer until all that grabbiness has gone. You're done - now change to a clean bit of cloth for the next area along.

    * Oh and do use white cotton for ultimate gunk removal satisfaction

when my LP gets tacky when atmospheric conditions or my body heat/sweat interacts, I give it a wipe over with the Gibson guitar polish and that seems to 'stop' it for a bit.

I use virtuoso polish too - works great. Looks and smells suspiciously like Brasso...

I think the polish bit is confusing me as I want the gunk removed but I suspect the cleaner is for that?

Yes cleaner first then polish. Now that I think about it, it's the cleaner that reminds me of Brasso, similar colour and smell. The polish is a fragranced white goop. Both do work very well - took white bloom off my 40 year old Gibson that nothing else would shift and left the finish looking like new

The combination of the cleaner and then the polish really is the thing that makes virtuoso so good - the cleaner is really rather exceptional on its own, but combined with the polish it can make the finish look much better than any other finish treatment I’ve ever used

Just thought I'd report back. It really is good stuff. My guitar was in more of a bad state than I originally thought. Ideally I'd need to strip down all the hardware off and give it a good going over but I don't think I'll do that in reality LOL. Still it's looking like a showroom guitar now albeit from the worn areas anyway but I like that :)

    Thanks for the tip guys
