Ric pickup options?

What's Hot
Probably sacrilegious, but.....

I love the way Rickys look, and their necks fit my stumpy toddler's hands nicely. And sometimes I really like the way they sound.

But with a bit of punk rock gain I find them a bit fizzy and twangy. I'd like a little more beef and bite, so I was wondering what my options are.

I've just ordered a couple of toasters from China, and I was thinking of gutting them and stuffing something else in there. Not a lot of room in there but I think I might be able to squeeze in one of those Dimarzio humbucking P90 things, they're a lot smaller than you'd imagine when you take the covers off.

Any other ideas?

Speak to Jaime at The Creamery, sure he can make you something bespoke as he already has a range of ric pickups.

You can fit a Gibson P100 in a toaster cover if you cut the edges of the bobbin down slightly, although it’s deeper than the Rick coil so if it’s a surface-mount pickup (330/360/620 type guitar) you will need to enlarge the rout in the body.

I recently had a pair of cheap ‘toasterbuckers’ as well, I can’t remember who made them but they were on Ebay - actual humbuckers in Chinese-looking toaster casings - which sounded good, but were unusably microphonic with any amount of distortion.

The best I’ve found so far are 80s-early 90s Rickenbacker High-Gains and HB1s.

Ooh yeah, good call, thanks. I'm pretty sure I've got some P100s that I took out of an ES135. In retrospect, they weren't half as bad as everyone said, I should have left them in. They're not P90s, but in some ways I preferred them. Only prob might be that the pole pieces will be in line with the central web of the toasters. I'll have a look around for open Dearmond-style shells or cheapie pickups.

Just the same as the original Rick coil. I actually liked it, since it made it not obvious that they were different.

I did it in an attempt to make my 425V63 not sound thin and honky, by the way... it didn't work.
