First timer - fret leveling - strings on..

Hi all,

Having watched loads of stuff across the web I'm getting to the point where I'm tempted to have a go at the above on an older guitar that has a fair but of fret wear and a sub-optimal action.

I've come from an engineering background (many years ago) so I'm not overly concerned about my capabilities in that regard but have always been terrified of cocking up and ruining something. I'm more than comfortable with setting up a guitar in terms of neck relief etc..

I seen a couple of vids demoing fret leveling with 'strings on' (using a spare truss rod to level the frets set to the neck relief) - what are your thoughts on this? 

I've got some tools to buy but once I've got these I'm going to have a go.. how bad can it be :)
