Have you ever broken a bone?

What's Hot
I never have.

On Friday my 91 year old mother broke two bones in her ankle. I'm quite amazed at how little pain she seems to have felt yet I'm terrified of the idea of braking a bone. They treated the pain with paracetamol - hardly touches a headache for me.

Finger (caught in a heavy door), elbow (came off my bike) and although not strictly a bone I broke my nose too (hit in face with cricket ball).
None were terribly sore after the initial couple of minutes, all of them ached for about 6 weeks though.

I've also dislocated a finger and torn ligaments in another finger. The ligaments were the troublesome one, far more annoying than any of the breaks

I've got a bit of bone missing from my shin that was done when I was around 12 - kicked while playing football - it was numb around the spot for years but I recently noticed that was no longer the case (I'm now 55).

Toe - bicycle crash while being an idiot (i.e. a teenager).

Hand - punched a friend who had kicked me (we were mucking about in the snow at school), when I spoke to him later he hadn't even been aware I'd done it (I'm clearly not a fighter).

Foot - stamping foot on floor while gigging (and being very overweight) I cracked a metatarsal.

Foot. Was painful at the time, but after the initial break as long as I was resting it was just achy as @strtdv says

I've broken a bunch of them.
They don't really hurt, it is more discomfort and swelling than anything.

Arthritis in the same spot a few years down the line is more painful.

  • Foot, ankle, leg, finger and arm. It was a right laugh every time.

    10/10 would recommend.

    So far I've broken...
    Toes- kickboxing
    Shin- lacrosse
    Ribs- MMA/BJJ
    Wrist- biking
    Knuckles- boxing
    Nose- kickboxing
    Skull- fell over (don't ask)

The ribs was the only one that REALLY hurt for much past the initial break. Once isolated & supported it's ok.
I also find joint dislocations more painful long term as the tendons and ligaments ache & the physio hurts like a melon farmer too!

  • Collarbone (MTB injury) sucked A LOT because every movement made it hurt. After 7 weeks off work I actually phoned them and asked to go back to work. I'm not proud of that. :D

(Also 91 days off the bike)

Various toes (only big toe was really painful)

    Nose (looked ridiculous)

Thumb (very annoying as you can't really use the hand)

    Knuckle (don't punch steering wheels)

    Ribs (bloody hurts)

I can't help about the shape I'm in, I can't sing I ain't pretty and my legs are thin

But don't ask me what I think of you, I might not give the answer that you want me to

I broke a toe in the most spectacular way. I was doing a Music For All charity thing for Peavey. As I was packing up I dropped a Backstage (10w practice amp) on my foot. Smashed my toe to bits. The children that were there learned some new words and I haven’t been invited back since.

I play guitar and take photos of stuff. I also like beans on toast.

I broke my right shoulder last year and bloomin' painful it was too. Needed surgery to pin it all back together but seven months on and it still hasn't knitted back together so I am now awaiting the results of the CT scan I had last week.
I don't recommend it to anyone

Both wrists (one had surgery to be reassembled) both shoulders (scapula one side clavicle the other which is plated). All the above mountain biking.

Bones mend fast and well when nicely aligned.

With the wrists the physio hurt more than the breaks.

I don't intend to do it again.

Left collar bone skateboarding, left rib snowboarding and finally left wrist skateboarding, nine of them hurt too much. It's not as if there are any nerve endings inside a bone, uncomfortable weeks after yes but not at the time. Just felt a little sick each time

Knuckles and thumb. Not good for a musician!

  • Soft tissue damage is far more painful than a simple break.

  • My own - wrist, fingers, toes.  They hurt when the weather is cold and damp.

Other people - a few things.  They don't hurt me at all.

Fractured my ankle when I was about 8. I stupidly put my leg inside one of those old style wooden roundabouts, got jammed in the metal work as it went round. I remember it being pretty painful, my Dad thought I was just over-reacting and insisted I was fine to walk home whilst pushing my bike :o. I tried, but collapsed in pain and he accepted he'd have to carry me home.

Once home he called the doctor out who sent me off to A&E and once diagnosed as fracture, my Dad felt awful about his initial reaction. I still like to bring it up from time to time ;) .

Ribs. Fell out of a sherry shop and forgot to put my hands out in defence so fell into a bicycle storage facility with my chest.
