Im after a bit more gain and fatness is there a pedal that can bring it out of my princeton 65rri?  "strat"

Im looking for something in that fushion rock style think alex hutchings lead tone smoothe sustain.  I used to play through multi effects units years ago as that was the type of music i was more into and it was easy to get.   But what about through a blackface clean amp?

Fulltone OCD comes to mind.. but those Boss 1X overdrive and distortion pedals sound bloomin impressive.

I was just going to say the Holdsworth or you can crib a similar concept by stacking a clean boost into a drive, or a clean boost into a drive into another drive (I do spark boost -> SD-1 -> Green Rhino, or on my mini pedal board that JHS thing in a gold box that I've forgotten the name of->tumnus->Ts mini). Set each one so it doesn't sound like it's doing a massive amount by itself, and then the levels so there's enough headroom that it sort of 'sits' inside the amp sound so you get clear, smooth gain rather than it pushing the amp itself into distortion, if this makes any sense.

The boss and OCD are not what I'm after way to harsh and gainy.

I also don't want to buy 3 pedals to do the job either  ;)

I will check out the Holdsworth I haven't heard of that pedal.

I've got an OCD V 1.4 and I'm surprised a few people think it's harsh. It's also great in the lower gain ranges (10 o'clock) on the HP Mode

One I forgot to mention, and my latest pedal, is the JHS AT Plus. Smooth, dynamic and versatile due to the 3 wattage choices (25, 50& 100) going from a more compressed sound to a more open one. The added boost is also great and once again, just because it has a fair amount of gain on tap, you don't have to go above 12 o'clock or go lower and add the boost to push it. Take a look at some of the Andy Timmons's videos

Suhr Shiba Drive - either the standard or reloaded (reloaded has more gain on tap)

As always it's the amp the pedal drives as much as the pedal
Itself  - I agree that the OCD can fit this bill, but maybe not into a 65 preamp.
    Red ones are better.

  • I’d hazard as you were doing this with a multi fx before you probably had a touch of reverb and delay smoothing it all out a bit. I’d dial in a short delay and a dink of reverb and give it a whirl.

A fuzz pushed with a clean boost before it sounds the archetypal fusion lead tone to my ears. I’ve got a Caline Pure Sky (Timmy clone) going into a Hoof fuzz and it sounds great. If you want a one box solution though, then the Wampler fusion is a good shout.
