If you check out the King Crimson Adrian Belew era you get to knock off two birds with one stone because Robert Fripp is in there too.  Actually  it's almost like 3 birds with one stone because Fripp sounds unlike a lot of his earlier output.

Fred Frith. He and I were exact contemporaries at University. First year I lived almost next door to him in College. I actually saw him gig only a few weeks ago. Given what he does with a guitar, the extended piece he played was surprisingly exhilarating, but, be warned, though originally from Yorkshire, he's been a Professor of Experimental Music in California for quite a number of years
