Guitar Insurance

n3pn3p Frets: 38

Good Morning,

I'm thinking it's a good idea to start insuring my most valuable guitars. For those in the know, does the guitar have to be appraised by a specialist in the know (who can provide a fair valuation) or is it more a case of providing your own valuation?

If the former, does anyone know of a company or specialist who can appraise my guitars? Ideally in London/Surrey unless they can give assess via e-mail with lots of hi-res photos. I'm hoping Jonathan at Feline could do it for me, as his knowledge is second to none.

Can anyone recommend an insurer? And if possible can anyone give me an idea of what they are paying vs value of equipment? I'm looking to insure (in my opinion) around £7-8000 worth of wood. There were only 271 made of one, 366 the other  and the third is a Custom Shop.

Thanks in advance,

Nick

I insured a guitar with musicguard at one point, not actually because I needed the guitar insured since it was only worth about £500 but because it came with public liability insurance that I needed to play at a party. It was quite reasonable in price, £27 for the year IIRC unless you want it insured for taking to gigs etc. rather than just insurance against theft and damage at home. I don't know about appraisal, with mine it didn't need any but maybe with such valuable instruments as yours the rules are different. Might be worth having ganders anyway http://www.musicguard.co.uk/home.asp?gclid=CL27jL-0nbkCFU_MtAodj20Aag

Have a word with your home insurance provider. Got mine insured that way after years with music guard. Same cover without public liability for a lot less cost.

Have a look at Allianz - they do instrument insurance and you can get an online quote.

Thanks for the recommendations. I spoke to MusicGuard, and despite their website mentioning "rare and antique based on valuation" the guy on the phone said it was some it was something they don't do and will only replace for the RRP which isn't really what I'm after.

The search continues! I'll try Allianz later

I also contacted my home insurance broker. My guitars were insured as a collection on my home insurance policy. I only play at home so they are not covered outside my house/ no public liability insurance element.
