Getting glossy with it..

What's Hot

I'm about to go on a super exciting whole house gloss adventure!

Only this time, there will be no people, no carpets and no animals around, so i can go gloss happy and not have to buy the quick dry stuff..

Went to b&q earlier and left glossless in a glossy daze. There was much gloss there in all different types and flavours.

So any thoughts on what gloss is best for coverage vs price vs not going yellow quickly vs hardwearability?

Is branded necessary? Just need white, not going fancy and having watered almond or anything of the like..

Always use the same make of undercoat as top coat!

The B&Q own brand one coat satin is pretty good.Just make sure that it's solvent based rather than water.

I've started using this stuff lately, its excellent.

Most own brand paints aren't much cop, Wickes OB stuff is particularly crap.

I wouldn't waste my time, effort (and money!) on glossing.

Honestly, there's only one paint I'd use, it was recommended to me a few years ago and it's easy to apply, looks great and stays white:

Edit: This isn't 'normal' Crown paint. Note the 'Contract' labelling/spec. I use the eggshell on woodwork and it's a joy to use, unlike others I've wasted money on over the years.

Gloss is a bit 80s, even satin is too plastic looking, get yourself a nice eggshell paint, more choices in colour and a much nicer finish.

As a tip kitchen/bathroom paint is exactly the same paint as eggshell.

well ,the Satinwood is an acrylic eggshell.......oil based eggshell is the best finish but it will die out in the next couple of years because manufacture cannot meet the VOC off- gassing criteria that has been imposed
.....everything will be waterbed ie Acrylic .........which is easier to paint on but it doesn't have the same quality opacity

Gloss shows up every tiny imperfection in whichever surface it's used on. Eggshell is a bit more forgiving.

My whole life has been turned upside down. I started this thread I tending to gloss. I don't know if I'm trendy enough for satinwood or eggshell..

The bit about omperfeimperf (that is the suggested phone spelling for imperfections) is a point though.. everything about this house is an imperfection.. expense has been greatly spared by the previous owners..

Thanks for thoughts everyone, will check them out!

I need to do my room actually. I painted the whole thing white except one black chimney breast.. you wouldnt believe the dust that accumulates on walls that you can see on black paint haha.

    Can't remember what I used.
    A satin white thing.

May as well have used crayolas, shit rubbed off on ya for ages.

I’m a self employed painter and decorator. Don’t get your paint from B&Q, it’s too expensive. I use Johnson’s professional undercoat and gloss all the time. It’s available in numerous finishes, gloss satin etc. Also use quality synthetic brushes. Avoid all brands quick dry/ acrylic paint like the plague if you want a good finish.

Also thin down your undercoat slightly with white spirit, it’s too thick straight from the tin.

I just use farrow and ball estate emulsion on the skirtings and it looks really good. Gloss looks awful.
