    UB40's country album.
Nearly as bad as Waylon Jennings’s Reggae album....
I don’t know about Waylon  but Willie Nelson certainly covered the odd reggae song

and UB40 really did have a go at country

How about the Rolling Stones' attempt at psychedelia on Their Satanic Majesties Request? Fortunately they went back to what they were good at.

Mike Oldfield’s Man On The Rocks is appropriately named - but less because it’s a rock album, and more because it’s like a boat stranded on some... absolutely dire.

His ‘Ibiza period’ trance/techno-influenced albums are very good though.

I worship the ground that Bruce Springsteen walks on, but the Seegar Sessions left me cold.
I seriously struggled with that one as well.

Beat me to it, I was thinking of Trans in particular.
I absolutely love Trans, it's one of my favourite NY albums. But yes it is a bit odd.

There must be a difficult balancing act for artists between making the same record over and over again, and taking risks that might fail and alienate your existing fans. Fortunately I have only one fan so I am free to pursue any direction I choose.

Now that I think about it... the first Longpigs album was great. Then they decided to embrace trip-hop.

Without my glasses on, I misread the Discussion title as Ill-Advised Gender Transitions. This immediately prompted thoughts of Genesis P. Orridge of Throbbing Gristle.

No way! Ok, it wasn't Sgt Pepper, but any album with 2000 Man, The Citadel, The Lantern, 2000 Light Years From Home and She's a Rainbow on it is not a bad one.
Admittedly psychedelia didn't suit them but there are some seriously woozy and fucked up sounds on there. So much mellotron can never be a bad thing.
