Whats a good basic trem pedal without to many extra knobs?

CKK Frogman (really!) is really nice Fenderish sounding tremolo.

Best value is the Source Audio Vertigo which is not only IMHO just about the best trem around (think Flint, but more) but pretty cheap used

I just bought a joyo tremolo from here and it's good. You can turn down the trem and use as a boost which I didn't know.

i didn't try any others. It sounds like the trem on my Princeton which is all I wanted.

This really isn't what most of us would call mid-price, but if you happen to need a good reverb pedal as well, the Strymon Flint does both effects really well (imo) in the same enclosure at around 250 quid new.  I bought one mainly for the reverb but I've used the trem way more than I expected to.
It has three variations of trem and I like them all. Worth a look perhaps, as the reverb is excellent too and replaced my RV-6.

Wow whats high price then : ) Played through a flint at the weekend and its great.

My over arching feeling was £250 for a flint vs £20 I paid for the joyo which sounds good, if I spent £50 on a used holy grail nano I'd be £180 better off!

Fair point!  Strymon certainly isn't cheap by any stretch of the imagination, but many good reverbs are typically around 125-150 (ie RV6, HOF, at least before recent price drop!,) then you have the MXR reverb at 200 quid....  my search was for better reverb than the RV6 I had, and the Flint had trem included as a happy coincidence more than anything. Wasn't an effect I'd been looking for, but having both in one unit is a bonus for me, as I was looking at the MXR before I found the Flint......so on that basis it was sort of cheaper to me than an MXR and separate trem would have been.

Oh it sounds great and at some point I will probably sell the trem and reverb and get a flint or a fender tre verb or mr black or something, I'm just looking at costs.

Thanks guys! Some VERY helpful sugggestions that i wouldn't have thought of!

I don't buy into the strymon thing im afraid. They sound really good but I just think there's a bit of 'make a pretty box, mark the price up' with them, which guitarist seem to love! I had an El Capistan for a while and tbh the Belle Epoch i A/B'd it with actually sounded more like a tape echo. As far as the flint goes, the trems sound nice but the reverb isn't exactly like springs no matter what they say. Nothing ive played yet beats physical springs vibrating!

The best trem I've heard so far is off my Vibroverb. I found out that it's Bias tremolo and if you look in the back you can actually see the power tubes flickering back and forward in tandom. Almost as beautiful as the northern lights. Lol.

Im just looking for something pedal board friendly, as i like to adjust the pots between songs etc..

Agreed on the Strymon Flint not doing spring especially well (although as well as most!).  I bought it more for the 80s reverb setting on that side of the pedal, but I would suggest if you want good spring then the Oceans 11 is pretty good for surf stuff.  I sold my El Capistan but I did really like it, just fancied a change and went EHX Grand Canyon instead - the built in looper was just one of the many space-saving attractions of that one. I only play at home and can't justify much of a pedal board so I look for boxes that cover a lot of bases fairly well, aka wife-friendly stuff so I max out what I get in as few enclosures as possible, sometimes  ;)

  • EHX Stereo Pulsar is the best value standalone tremolo pedal i've used.  They often get overlooked.

Great range of modes/shaping, easy to use, and sounds absolutely superb.

I also think these cut through a mix much better than other trem pedals which can get a bit lost in certain chains.

For a basic pedal without many knobs that specialises in a bias-type tremolo, the best thing would be a used Monster Effects Swamp-Thang... but they tend to go for £90 and well over, even with chippy paint. Your best chance of getting something mid-priced might be the Mojo Hand Sugar Baby, a.k.a. the Bayou.

The only downside to the Vertigo is you can’t read the text or knob settings onstage in certain lighting conditions

That and its digital, if it matters to you.

I also had a trelicopter which was to my ears a bit bland - similarly had a Cmatmods tremoglo which was just too much of a perfect sine wave and so really pretty bland.

I really like the Zvex Sonar, vexter versions are not too expensive but it’s harder to dial in the wave-shape than on some other pedals - though that is also its advantage, you can get very creative with it. Plus you get an onboard Machine and SHO and tap tempo.
