How to tell which is the V1 pre valve?

I often asssume that v1 is the extreme left or right of the chassis. Is that always the case?
what about when the line of valves goes along the width of the chassis? How does one recognise the v1 from the circuit board?

V1, unsurprisingly, will be the first one in the signal path. It is usually nearest to the input jack socket(s).
You say, atom bomb. I say, tin of corned beef.

So in a lateral line of valves, would it be the one by the amp face?

In a properly designed amplifier it’ll be the valve farthest away from the mains supply, as it’s the most sensitive.

    What amp?

It’s meant to be a superlead copy from the 70s. I’ll dig a photo of the valve configuration once these pain killers kick in. Pulled my back out.
Probably from moving it every time I tested different v1s.

I always have to remember that in my Vox AC15, V5 is the first preamp valve and V1 is the phase inverter!

I imagine the last pre is the one closest to the power tubes, ie on the right:
