Thinking of upgrading the pups on my VM Jazz. Thinking Seymour Duncans or Dimarzio pref.

If you have the Duncan Designed JB-101 pair, leave them in there.

I believe they are the later pickups. No markings on the covers. Do you suggest looking inside them?

This photograph illustrates the difference between the Duncan Designed JB-101 and the later "in-house" Fender designed pickups with the rounded ends on the upper bobbin plates.

The current pickups use nasty shiny black plastic covers. The rod magnet polepieces are exactly flush with the plastic. (On the DuncDes, the magnets protrude almost 1mm.)

My pole-pieces are flush. I got my bass in January 2014 so I must have got during or after the change-over. I don't see the point in taking the pups out for a look - I can do that as I go to change them and can consider selling them on at that point.

I quite like the sound of them, but intend to modify the bass over the next few months. Thinking pickups and Hi-Mass bridge. I've already changed pots and jack-socket. So that probably leaves machineheads for later.

Hi-Mass bridge would make sense with DiMarzios or Quarter Pound pickups for a modern sound.

I've got a set from my old (1993-ish) MIM Fender Jazz if that's of interest.

Thanks for th advice chaps. I got a used set of pickups from a Jap 75 RI which I believe to be 60s style. More details when I get them.
