Obviously the scale is also a consideration. Basically, if a JM is Scooby Doo, then a Jag is definitely scrappy. To me, they're just a bit spikier and volatile. Don't believe all you'll read about the Classic Players when you start to research them; internet wisdom will tell you they're shit. I have expensive tastes, and I toured a stock one for 2 years and loved it to bits. There are good ones and bad ones, same as any other. The CP jags don't necessarily sound like a traditional jag though (nothing like the 2 I have now) but they're rich and versatile.

I have a Mexican CP Jazzmaster. Don't believe the hype they are not as bad as folks will tell you. The necks and bodies are excellent, they have CTS pots and switchcraft electronics and secondhand they are incredible value.

The pickups on mine have been swapped for a set of Mojos, the bridge was slung in the bin (those AOM bridges are turd) - there's a Wilkinson roller on there now, I fitted an AVRI trem unit (cos I had one and they are nicer quality) and a Staytrem arm. It now rings like a bell, the harmonics are incredible and you can play those strings behind the bridge.

My Jazzmaster has been a bit of a journey - and has taken many months of fiddling but its now *brilliant*.

I can't recommend one high enough

    Jaguar>Jazzmaster.

    Wrong

    you need both.
I don't like 25.5" scale guitars. Jaguar all the way.

If you have fat fingers you won't need both, Jazzmasters have a standard Fender 25.5 inch scale, the Jaguar has a shorter 24 inch scale.

I built this for about £300, all the parts secondhand apart from the wiring kit which I bought from Allparts.
    Allparts body
WD Music 22 fret 9.5 radius neck
    Grover tuners
    Mustang bridge
    Jap Jazzmaster trem
    AVRI pickups

That is pretty cool. I'm afraid if I tried to build a guitar it would turn out like Homer's BBQ grill :-(

If I can do it anyone can

Its simple really just like painting by numbers. Just get a good book like Dan Erlwines guitar player repair & set up guide to help you with set up etc.

Take your time with the wiring & you can have a guitar in an afternoon.

Its a great learning experience & will give you confidence to mod & set up your guitars in the future. Lots of fun too.

Please tell me Jazzmaster's are not worth the money or effort, so I can move on to the next pipe dream:)

Jazzmasters are the coolest, nicest playing, most stable of tremolo guitar you'll ever play. You'll be a better player and never sleep alone.

Which is obviously what inspired the advertising tagline -"SAY GOODBYE TO JAZZ MAGS WITH A JOOKY JAZZMASTER!"
    Or the JOOKY JAZZMAGSTER

  • Jazzmaster trem > any other trem.

Stable, simple to fit, and if you want it to just go down in pitch (like me) there is no set up at all, just tighten it up till it's done.

Also, you are 10 percent more attractive when holding one.
