Lazy J20 equivalent

What's Hot

As some of you may know that I already have a J20 and been thinking of getting another for a dual set up etc. However, rather having to raise the cash for another J20 I was wondering what you guys would say to be a good equivalent in terms of sound and vibe?

LOL well at that price I might as well buy another J20. No I meant what would be a good cheaper equivalent :)

I think a blues deluxe is 40w. Too loud for me if it is

LOL! Now we all know that is not what we are talking about when it comes to getting the sweet breaking up point. That's for another thread :)

The Blues Deluxe is actually a good shout, while it's not a J20 by any stretch, you can use one of the master volume 'attenuator' boxes that can be found on eBay to bring the volume down and get a decent 'just on breakup' tone. It goes in the FX loop and basically limits the signal to the output stage I think... Not a patch on the VAC circuit though ;-)

Thanks Neil. Of course I will still try and strive to get another lazy j20. I think I'll hold off for now though until you receive and tell us all about that J35 you've just ordered :)

An attenuator generally goes after the output stage, between the amp and the speaker.

Personally, I'd get a used Deluxe RI, or a clone, maybe a Cornell if you want something similar.
If you want something "complimentary" I think a used Vibrolux would be awesome, although not wonderfully cheap.

Cornells are still quite pricey aren't they i.e. moving towards the lazy j prices? After I've paid out for interim items then have to sell them at a loss to buy what I wanted originally. Think I may as we'll hold out for a second hand J20 or J35 :)

I used to have a Cornell Romany Plus.  Not a patch on my Lazy J.  Just get another Lazy J.

I have heard a really good Tweed Victoria but you are in the same price bracket as the Lazy J with those.

Yes I agree. I love my J20. Maybe another j20 with the higher headroom version could be interesting alongside my standard J20.

Oh dear my poor bank account :(

Victoria selling prices seem to have softened - their tweed deluxe the 20112 seems to sell for less than a grand these days.

True but Not the box I'm thinking of, it's not really an attenuator, more of a volume control that sits in the FX Loop.

@crunchman is right. I tried the Victoria Deluxe when I was looking, it was nice and pretty close to the original - a lower wattage than the Lazy J - so pretty much ungiggable as a standalone amp without micing it and once I'd heard the J20 there was no comparison.

I think I'll have to stick to the Lazy J20H. Thanks for all your inputs.

I've got some saving to do :(
