Needed to do something today

What's Hot

Needed a bit of a distraction today, which was a good opportunity to get on with stuff I've not found time to get around to for ages ...

So, first up;

image

This is one of GSPBasses creations that I managed to steal from under the noses of a horde of theFB regulars a (long) while back.  I've got a pair of BKP P90s which I've promised a new home, so guess where they're going.

I've dithered over how to finish it - was intending to get it sprayed "properly" - but changed my mind!

image

It'll need a scratchplate - but look at that long tenon join!!

image

image

I think I'll finish it in red.

Whereas this one won't be red

    image

I need to do some work on the neck p'up cavity because Mr @theGuitarWeasel is making me a Buccaneer to drop in there.

And another one that's going to need a scratchplate.

    Thanks @dchwhite

All I've done is apply some Wudtone to a lovely piece of Mahogany put together by the rather talented Mr GSP ... but I've wondered for a long time whether I should have parted with my Gibbo DC faded ( @McToot thieved it from my hands), so this is an opportunity to try to recreate it.

The Thinline has a rather nice neck to go with it

That thin line neck looks fantastic! (as do the guitars of course)

    It's one of GSP's ... he'd do a good job for you.

You're too modest :) - both the finish and the photography look fantastic on them (as of course does Grahame's work).

  • Firstly, gimme the tele. What a beautiful neck. And yeah, his necks are killer. Just well made all around.

Secondly, that's possibly the most perfect looking wudtone finish I've seen. As I've done more, it's become much better each time (my p-bass is near perfect) but that really looks absolutely flawless. Nice work!

    Thanks all.

It's a bit of a cheat really, using GSP's bodies.  But I'm hopeless at doing necks, and it'd take me many years of practice before I got half as good as he is ... and I don't have the time, so I'll just cheat.

The finish on the Tele is coming along nicely.  It's had a coat on the back, and a second on the front (including on the insides of the f-hole) today.  Really looking forward to hearing Ash's pickups in it.

The prs-alike will be a while because that's having a proper spray job.  I think we're in the paint-hardening prior to polishing stage now, so patience is key ... and hard work.

The DC had a couple more coats too.  I should really have stopped half-way through, both the first coat and the second, to show what a transformation the Wudtone has ... stunning.

    Love that DC!
so if you fancy a reissue of a guitar they never made in a colour they never used then it probably isn't too overpriced.

Last colour coats went on both this morning - and should dry off pretty quickly in the heat we've got, so the satin (DC) or gloss (thinline) coats can go on soon ...

    image

The lighting angle really changes the look of the DC ...

    image

I'm going to need to cut out the neck p'up cavity, before I top coat this one (just waiting for the p'up to arrive, because it's not standard dimensions and I want to cut it out accurately!

    image

    Look good together ??

No panic really @theGuitarWeasel ... I've got plenty to do.

But it does mean that we could accelerate the beer-drinking-around-Liverpool-St-Stn-one-evening schedule too ...

    ;)

@TTony - did you grain fill the Tele? The third one of that for sale thread is on it's way to me now :)

  • TTonyTTony Frets: 27487
No, I deliberately didn't grain fill it. Decided that I'd prefer the feel of the grain!  It's close to done now, I'll try to post some more pics at the weekend so you can see how it turned out ...

So, this is where we were ...
    image

The only problem being that I've yet to find a Tele neck pickup that I actually like.

So, let's get busy with the router ...
    image

You're not wrong ... that neck cavity does look just a little large for a standard humming bucker ...

Is it a bit of extra weight relief?  Or perhaps TTony being a little careless with his router (wouldn't be the first time)?  Or perhaps there's a cunning plan ...

    And here's a clue ... one or Mr @theGuitarWeasel's finest ...

    image

Whilst you're thinking about what might be in that box, the scratchplate template is almost done ...
    image

Though I'm thinking that the red looks a bit better than hardboard brown.
