ISRC

Are isrc codes necessary when releasing songs as mp3s these days?

    Thanks @miserneil

In a band context, should there be an isrc for each member (where writing credits agreed as applying to all)?

    Help appreciated ;)

If I remember correctly, the ISRC is for the completed work and contains the Country where the work was regestered, your label/who is releasing info and the year of register. you then allocate a 5 digit code to the completed work/song.

It's then your job to register the work/song and ISRC with PPL and it's here where you identify the writer(s) and what percentage of the royalty they will recieve.

There is lots of info here: http://www.ppluk.com/

They are a really helpful company and were great when I first set up my own label and started releasing songs.

Definitely worth the graft to get ISRCs for your tracks. If you're pitching them to radio producers etc they won't take them seriously unless you've got all that in place… The PPL are really helpful if you get bamboozled by their online system (it is confusing) but they do very occasionally send you royalties for any airplay you can get so well worth it! As @miserneil says, you can set up separate percentages for each band member / performer if required...

Thanks both for the info. I registered with ppl and got myself an isrc so the tracks are now coded. Next stage is the percentage split stuff.
