Fender 2 point trem problem

I recently bought a Custom Deluxe strat with the push in trem arm. It has two clicks as you push it in, the second one means fully in. I am used to screw in terms, I prefer a short arm as I've developed a technique of wrapping the arm inside my pinky to add vibrato as playing (like DG and NY). However, if you grip the trem arm closer to the bridge than usuual, it pulls the trem arm out of the second click position remarkably easy. I have never had this issue before.....any ideas how to cure it?

  • You'll probably be able to get replacement washers that hold the arm in. I remember having the same problem with Ibanez arms.

    Failing that, gaffa.

Some people use and elastic band around the end of the arm to keep it tight in the collet on JMs and Jags. It might work on your deluxe too.

Or you could get a staytrem. They have the whole vibrato arm thing sussed.
The Bigsby was the first successful design of what is now called a whammy bar or tremolo arm, although vibrato is the technically correct term for the musical effect it produces. In standard usage, tremolo is a rapid fluctuation of the volume of a note, while vibrato is a fluctuation in pitch. The origin of this nonstandard usage of the term by electric guitarists is attributed to Leo Fender, who also used the term “vibrato” to refer to what is really a tremolo effect.

  • Nail varnish around the bottom of the arm works surprisingly well too. Wait for it to dry, obviously.

  • A wrap of PTFE tape (also known as plumber's tape) around the end of the vibrato arm might work. Something extra for the washers to hold on to.
