Can't shift the notion of buying a Boss GT-100. Can someone put me off please?!

I've heard the fizzy top end on the distortion patches attracts bears. Bears!

Do you really want the consequences of that on your conscience?

    Digital != tone!

Also I hear that they used Nazi gold on the connectors.

Nothing! It's great! I can use it and it sounds fabbo.

    Pro's of switching:

    Less cable
    Midi switching my amp
More effects choice using less real estate
    4 cable method
Presets whilst still having manual mode
Large LCD screen for reading preset names - my main beef with the HD500
Same delay algorithms (I would assume?)
Wider range of distortion and drive pedals

    Cons of switching:

Would have to sell some of my current gear first - if GT didn't work out, I'd be up shit creek
Reverbs might not be as good
Not sure how I'd interface the Zoom with it, or whether I would need to
Possible issues with silent gap when switching presets
Lots of options - maybe less is more!
New foot workflow to get used to
Might introduce some tonal change that I'm not anticipating

I borrowed a GT 100, I didn't like the user interface or the hi gain sounds.

    Cleans were pretty good though.

I bought a zoom G5, because the user interface is 'better' IMO.

  • Go try one in a shop.  Do you change your mind a lot on settings or are you a set and forget kind of guy?  If you're likely to want to tweak it frequently and find you can't work out how to program it in 5 minutes in a shop then don't buy it because you will forget how to access one of the functions when you need to and if you can't work it out quickly you'll wish you had your old setup back.

See, if Zoom would just engineer a way to make their G3 or G5 units talk to each other, I don't think anybody would ever buy anything else. Hell, they don't even need to give them a loop - I'd happily spring for a pair of G3s if they'd just sort their shit out and give 'em MIDI.

  • Is the Zoom G7.1ut not as good a unit?
If it is you could probably hook two of them up via midi and keep the whole set-up very cheap, they can be had for £109 on PMTOnline. :)

do you like the drive/distortions? Do the delays do what you want? Do the other f/x sound how you want/like?

Basically a set and forget kinda guy. I dial in at a loud volume, so never fall foul of bedroom settings syndrome.

Never heard the drives, if the delays are like my DD7's then they'll be perfect. The sub-delay seems to be a standard digital delay, and I can use the actual delay slot for the reversed delay that I use. FX1 can be phaser, and FX2 can be flanger (which I've just started to use recently)

The delays and overdrives are very good as are the phasers. In fact most of the effects are excellent. I did and overdrive shootout between the GT-100's TS model, the L6 M5's TS model and the Hardwire CM-2 Tube Overdrive. I liked the CM-2 more but the GT-100 and M5's overdrives were roughly of the same quality and all 3 sounded virtually the same, except the CM-2 sounded slightly better, but only just. Personally I think the amp modelling is pretty good especially the Blackface model. Their own amp models are very very good. I used to be a Boss hater but the GT-100 has really won me over. You could always try one and give "30 day trial" treatment to see if you like it.

You can have 3 delays at the same time if want. It's a crazy bit of kit if you ask me and well worth the outlay and does probably more than you'd ever need.

Aye, as I said; nowt wrong with my current setup at all. It's the nicest sounding setup I've had in a long time; keeps the noise to a minimum, has a wide range of sounds, and sounds very good!

It's perhaps a grass is greener situation.
