NGD - Semi-hollow beauty

My mind is blown by this guitar!

Feels like cheating it's so easy to play. Smaller than a 335 body so really comfortable, weighs around 7lbs. Lollar pickups, and tone is somewhere between 335 and LP also. Brazilian R/W fretboard and nice chunky neck. As you will guess with it being a Collings, cannot find a single anything that is not 100% perfect with it.

Highly recommend you try an I-35 if you come across it in a store.

Definitely one of those guitars that you immediately start to wonder whether you need all your other axes any more....

  • thats a real nice looking guitar. Was it bought new?
The Bigsby was the first successful design of what is now called a whammy bar or tremolo arm, although vibrato is the technically correct term for the musical effect it produces. In standard usage, tremolo is a rapid fluctuation of the volume of a note, while vibrato is a fluctuation in pitch. The origin of this nonstandard usage of the term by electric guitarists is attributed to Leo Fender, who also used the term “vibrato” to refer to what is really a tremolo effect.

Cheers guys. It's a 2008 model, amazing condition though. I traded an acoustic for it. Have had a Collings electric before and sort of regretted parting with it. But always fancied an I-35 and this was the spec and colour I wanted, so took the plunge. No regrets, that's for sure!  :)

    Collings guitars are beautiful, congrats!

I'm glad you confirmed it's smaller than a 335, I thought from pictures that they probably were but I'd never been able to find out for sure.  A bit bigger than a 339/336 though?

Sort of in between the two, but a bit nearer to the 339/356. It goes like this:

    ES 335
    Lower bout width: 16 1/2

    I 35

    Lower bout width: 15

    ES359/339

    Lower bout width: 14.25

Unfortunately that means I can't just say to myself "I can never buy one of those, too big for me".... could be expensive!

I'm intrigued by that slight construction difference - hollowed out mahogany body like a 336 (or 356), but a separate alder centre block rather than leaving a block of mahogany.  I wonder how much effect that has on the tone?

And crazy dutch man demoing from place I got it from.

He does loads of demos for various companies this fella, always enjoyable I think. Doesn't take it to seriously like many you see on Youtube. Check out the ones he does for Rebel Relic, mostly Strat's and Tele's. Some great viewing.

Not much a of a demo in terms of the tonal variety available, as it is just rocking out on the bridge pup, but fun nonetheless.

That's your actual guitar in the demo, presumably.  Sounds great, lots of twang and woodiness in the tone.

I thought he was playing through the little 1w Marshall at first, I thought oh, I've got one of those, could I sound like this?

    :)

Yeah man, that's the guitar. Actually if anything, the real beauty of it is in the clean tone. And you know that way really good guitars just sound more 'in tune' than others. It has that in a big way.

Wouldn't say it's a 335 replacement. Bit of a different thing, as you would expect from the construction. Having said that, you can dial it in to sound somewhere near to a 335, whereas you would struggle to get a 335 doing some of the tones this has. There is a bit more treble on tap with these, but the controls work so well, you can dial it out without ruining the tone at all.

I would probably still have a 335 as well. A really good Gibbo 335 is an amazing thing. Finding one is a bit more of a challenge. And I hate the skinny necks on regular production 335's. So options are limited even further...
