I know what you mean. iPads are insanely expensive, but the low cost of the quality software for them takes the sting out of the tail.

Get a s/h iPad and it's even more attractive  ...

FWIW, I've done more guitar recording since I got my iPad than ever before.  It's just so simple, and there are so many quality - and cheap - apps about too.

@equalsql thanks very much for that heads up, I got the compressor bundle and played about with it on some work in progress recordings. Really handy as one effect in particular is exactly what I was looking for - a fast compressor for drums. The VAT is 22%, payed at the Italian rate.
