In the experience of wise forum members......how often is it possible to see pot dates via the f-hole of a vintage Gibson/Epiphone guitar?

I dunno, aren't you supposed to be able to use a dentist's mirror to look inside the body (we all have one of those around the house, surely....)

    lol

You can sometimes, but you'll need a good light and usually a lot of persistence - it's common for all four to be either covered with solder or obstructed by the cable loom, which goes across the backs of them all to keep it away from the f-hole. The treble volume is usually the best bet, but sometimes you can see a partial code on one or more of the others which will narrow it down far enough if you know the rough year anyway.

I love Strats and Tele's, but all the ones I've seen from that year are 21 frets, so they are out.

I've always fancied a Semi Hollow, so I guess a pretty Gibson ES-335 or a Yamaha SA-50 would be a nice change.

    1973..
Anyway I choose Paul Stanley's custom LoBue asymmetric flying V from that timeframe.

    @bluechargeboy - good call!

1965 for me - maybe an SG Junior if I can find one as nice as @musteatbrains one that we refretted, or a decent strat.

I did have a 1965 Marshall JTM45 with gold plexi logo  - wish I still had that.

Another 1980's child. Thanks for all the advice, I think I'm going off to investigate!
I would love to change my username, but I fully understand the T&C's (it was an old band nickname). So please feel free to call me Dave.

I am 1972 as well but i wouldn't touch a Fender from that era.
I'm wondering what the hell i would even want from '72 that wasn't built really badly? The early 70's weren't exactly prosperous times for manufacturers..................
    Don't know. Baffled.
I would probably buy a '62 Strat and Lie about my age !

Is a YOB amp a possibility?
Silverface Twin Reverb from that period (with JBLs) was awesome IMHO.

I think my day of birth was a Sunday, so struggling there. And there was quite a lot of crap farmed out all-round in the 80s; some kind of Tokai / Burny LPJ, if I'm lucky.

There are some good acoustics from around then that aren't that expensive. My '71 Martin D12-35 is very nice, for example.

Also Rickenbackers - that's the last full year of the full-width neck inlays and checker binding on some models, so a bit more valuable, but like almost all vintage Ricks, not that expensive by Fender/Gibson standards. Ironically this seems to be because Rickenbacker don't have a bad period, so there are no "pre bad period" guitars to inflate the prices of...

That's another good idea. I didn't consider acoustics.
Thanks i will look into that. I still have to get my Dad's old 60's Yamaha to Feline to be recommissioned but once that's done i might go looking for a decent '72 acoustic. (and a Fender Twin amp !)
    Cheers for that.
    :)

My one and only vintage guitar is a '65 Melody Maker - the Pat Travers/Joan Jett body shape.  It doesn't have all the original parts but it hasn't been refinished or routed either so it's almost vintage correct..

Cool little guitar, but one year off YOB for me.

Idealy it'd be an '87 PRS Multifoil, although I'd be happy with any '87 PRS tbh. :)

You could have had a really nice Gibson J-45 from a friend of mine recently!
