When tone nerd-dom goes too far ...

What's Hot

Just read this on a forum:

..... I tinker with pole pieces & heights , I used to adjust em from song to song in the middle of a recording, I think of poles as extra tone knobs ......

That's plain mad if you ask me!

Do you go up a gauge for louder punchier tonez or do you go down a gauge for supersonic speed?

Ha... that's nothing... I swap bionic hands for each chord change.

A fret-dress before each song is mandatory for me....

I find I get the best sound and most appreciative crowd when I put the guitar down.

I can't play lead so i call my mate at the end of the first verse and ask him to come down to wherever i'm playing and do it for me.

    What utter bollocks.
Next thing it will be is someone apparently noticing an improvement in 'TONE' between wearing Asda and Levi jeans while playing !!!

I want my guitar to sound good and good 'Tone' is a great thing but this lot make me laugh.

That's exactly why I wear Levi's, tighter bottom end......

The old design and sales pitch for Q-tuner pickups was based on being able to adjust the poles for totally different tones   As a starting point I think they recommended trying all level,  outside poles raised with centre ones lowered and centre ones raised with outer ones lowered

they looked like this - so quite a bit of tweakability

    http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i20/daemonbarbeque/DSC00790.jpg

of course, they abandoned that idea and now their pickups have no pole peices at all.   make of that what you will

    .....

It can make a difference, but I only really tweak polepeice height when i feel something is lacking.  overall height is much more noticeable

"in the middle of a recording"... Seems OK to me, considering people change whole rigs for recoeding different songs. No mention of doing so mid-gig, which would, of course, be insane.

  • I have heard stories of Jaco Pastorius stopping mid-gig and adjusting his truss rod. He was a bit mad, though.

  • I like to get my guitar refinished in in either poly, or nitro before each song depending on the sound I'm going for.

I've heard that. I also liked the stories about him playing with his back to the audience so no one could copy what he was doing. I remember one were he was being interviewed and complained about being too tense to cope and insisted the interviewer went for a swim with him first before he would do the interview.
