Anyone used one of these Tascam things?

Looks useful. 2 mic inputs and a metronome through headphones are all I'd really need.  Would make amp mic'ing easier, as I don't have a laptop.

I used to have the dp-008ex. Good sound quality for basic recording but, even though it's pretty easy to use, you still have to fiddle with menus etc. The compressor, reverb etc seem like a good idea but the quality isn't up to the same level you'd get doing a proper mix down on your PC/Mac.

I prefer the DR-40 for ease of use but it depends on what you want to do.

Literally just capture ideas in half decent quality with a couple of mics in front of the amp.  I'll be using my own effects. 

If it has reamping capability (ie dry signal to the Tascam, then put that through the amp and capture the mic signal) then all the better.

Sounds like you probably don't need an 8 track recorder - have a look on the Tascam website to see if any of their other recorders fit the bill. Or the Zoom H4n or similar might be a good fit.

Cool, will do.  So long as it's got one or two XLR inputs, I'm fine.

Neat, but I already have cables and I'd rather be able to capture a mic'd signal, rather than just a reamp-ready one. 

Still cool though, and not *that* expensive.

This is my go-to unit at the moment for capturing ideas. It has XLR ins as well as line in etc.
