Wudtone finish question

I have a guitar body that's been finished with a couple of deep colour coats, base coats and top coats. 

What do I need to do if I want to add more colour? Sand back the top coats? Or am I stuck with it as is?

You need to get to the colour you want with the deep colour (mostly on the first coat, but you can use a few coats of deep colour) and the base coats. 

If you've top coated, you'll need to remove it.  It'll be hard to remove the top coats without removing the finish underneath, but it may be possible.
