There are far too many to list, it really depends on what I'm playing, whether electric or acoustic, 6 string or twelve, not to mention the mood I am in, like if I'm in the mood for pinched harmonics, blues, rock, classical, whether I want to relieve some tension and anger or feeling more melodic or bluesy.  There are just far too many variables to put together a short list, one thing is for sure things like ZZ Top, and power chord heavy stuff never fails to make me smile, but the same could be said for right hand tapping, so it really is a hard one to answer.

For 12 string acoustic two tracks that jump straight at me, even though they where not written for 12 string, is Randy Rhodes Dee, and Bon Jovi's Wanted Dead or Alive, I find I'm always playing those when I have a twelve string in my hand.  More so than Hendrix's Hear My Train A Comin which was written for a twelve string.
Hows it going lefty ? Hope u r well man.

Interesting... Lot of Schenker love popping up.
I'm currently enjoying playing the intro to Doctor Doctor, Strangers in the Night version, dovetails nicely into Sultans of Swing, which is also a favorite.
Dm is the saddest key ;)

I'm still working on Symphony of Destruction by Megadeth.  I have the complete song memorised and can play the rhythm up to speed with the CD, it's just that solo!  I can play it at about 85% slower than the original recording.  There are a few tricky position shifts so I skip a few notes to facilitate these.    The solo is very, very satisfying to play, even a bit slower than the album.

  • Steve Vai - not a great songwriter but a very talented guitar player.  The Buzzcocks "Ever Fallen In Love", simple to play and a stone classic.  Also many Weller songs, tunesmith.
He's a hard man to ignore, but it's worth the effort.

I love playing our band's version Call Me by Blondie and Take Me Out by Franz Ferdinand.

We rock both of these up.

Call Me is just uptempo rock, with a great energetic rhythm, melodic solo and it just works for us.

Take Me Out is also a great tune. When the bass drum kicks in for the intro, I can't help but feel the energy.

Deep Purple - Highway Star: just awesome, my warm up tune most days
Iron Maiden - Wasted Years: great riff, verse, solo
Iron Maiden - The Trooper: ditto
Guns n Roses - 14 Years: learned it years ago, love the sleazy bar-band atmosphere, probably my fave Slash solo
Van Halen - Ain't Talking Bout Love: great riff / song, I tend to widdly woo the solo, I always felt the original was a wasted opportunity
Led Zeppelin - Babe I'm Gonna Leave You: my acoustic song of choice, at least until I can play Don't Think Twice It's Alright properly
    All practice and no theory

I've just finished teaching one of my students Hotel Cali..
that's another really nice solo to play..
although it's not rapid, it's not as easy as it sounds to play really well..
it demands a great deal of control and is chock full of some wonderful bends..

also, there are several licks in there that don't fall nice and comfy under the fingers..
it's not a solo where everything falls nicely under the fingers..
so it don't come to you, you have to go to it and 'make it happen'
play every note as if it were your first

Still of the Night - Whitesnake. Must be wearing spandex for maximum effect.

Definitely. In fact there's loads off 1987 that are fun to play, but Still of the Night is tops.

Kashmir - such an amazing riff and so pleasing to play.

Love is the law.  Just a great guitar part.

  • Mostly Floyd stuff that does it for me, but whilst the huge wall of sound solo tones are great, there's something indescribably satisfying using a brighter overdrive and hearing every string ring out on things such as "Short and Sweet"

Also, anything that uses a fair bit of delay, Run Like Hell being a good example again, but also the intro/riff on "Take It Back"

Cream - sunshine of your love. It's very simple but with the clean channel cranked to 11 on my Marshall DSL5C it sounds uber good.

For sure!  "Cry For The Nations" is such fun to play -- stonking riff, brilliant guitar solo -- classic Schenker.
It's a shame that it would never go down well live in a covers band cos I would love to play this live!
