Chord Of The Week 7/5/16 - an Fadd9 from Purple Rain by Prince

Continuing our journey through the Purple Rain chord progression in tribute to His Purpleness, here's the third chord in the intro after the last two weeks Bbadd9/D x(1)0311 and Gm7add11: 3x0311. This one's a bit of a stretch, as you can see in the video - good job it was played on a guitar with a shorter scale-length :-) It works as a chord because the extra 9th extension is pitched in the middle of the range on the 4th string, while the top string is playing the root. A more conventional Fadd9 voicing xx3123 has the root on the 4th string and the 9th on the top string, but this one sounds well lush -
