How to create experimental music and destroy a guitar - fix an amp to a truck, plug in a guitar and drag it along until the guitar is destroyed ....

image

What it sounds like ..

And there's a Brit who does it ..

And here's the Brit in a piece of 'performance art' ...

Nuts and a waste of a good guitar ...

Remember, it's easier to criticise than create!

Still in better nick than a Nash relic.

Seriously, what the fuck is this? Am I narrow minded for not 'getting it'?

To me, he's making money by destroying an instrument that could have gone to a school, or a community project. Instead, selfish bastard has been completely unoriginal and destroyed the instrument, no doubt being paid for this waste of time handsomely.

I sometimes wish I had it in me to con people from modern art.

Unoriginal, too - hendrix, cobain et al have all destroyed guitars. The difference is that they could play them first...

  • Attention seeking eegits.

Experimental musical on the whole follows experimental science;  For every good discovery the are 999,999 experiments that are an utter waste of time.

If he got paid 10 pounds for that 2 minute video of him smashing a guitar, that works out at £300 per hour.

True, but i doubt that he's made many more videos like that. If so then i thoroughly concur that it is a gratuitous waste of everyone's time and money! :P

  • A lot of so-called 'performance art' is a waste of time and money. As is Tracey's bed/tent etc. Narcissistic nonsense.

I hate people who smash up musical instruments.
so if you fancy a reissue of a guitar they never made in a colour they never used then it probably isn't too overpriced.

I am fairly certain that the instruments that are smashed barely come with in the category of 'Musical'.  :))

  • Even when Jimi or Pete Townsend did this, and every time I see video of it being done, all I can think is "What a waste of a good Guitar"

I used to hate people smashing guitars, but I totally get it now. It's a powerful form of rebellion, a statement that can work on many levels. It can say the music is everything and this is just a tool, it can say I'm rich enough to not care, it can say does this shock you, it can say f**k the man, it can say this instrument pissed me off, it can say you pissed me off, it can say I'm trying to incite a reaction from a mob ... So many possibilities!

Pete related that he used to grab a Ricky off of the wall at Jim Marshall's shop and shout out, "pay you Friday" when he was short of funds but the bills were always paid later by management.

He was also very well know to Jim, so hardly stealing.

Each to their own - his property he can do with it what he likes. Performance art doesn't appeal to everyone but that's the point, its not cowing to the lowest common denominator to appeal to a large number of people.

And as for those that get angry about a guitar getting smashed - well, thats your choice but perhaps getting angry about things that are truly wrong with the world would be a better use of your ire. ;-)
