I'm more than happy to do guitar, bass or drum programming.

I suggest agreeing on a format, and a place to post it.

    So,

Cubase, logic or garageband, or whatever, or is it MP3 sharing?

If it's the last, Soundcloud.  Someone open a soundcloud account and create a playlist called "Fretboard Collab_title" or whatever and give the other collaborators access to it.  Can email MP3s around and post them up if necessary.

The other possibility is dropboxing files about the place.

There is also Ohm Force's collab software, whatever it's called.

Dropbox would be easiest. Can include a text file with tempo, key, chords etc as a handy reference.

As for file type we could use WAV and make a note of what bar the part starts.

I'd suggest Reaper cos it's free. Include the original track for ecH part so those with the same vests can open it but also bounce each track so you have the printed audio version as well.

The specific DAW is fairly unimportant, most can import WAV or MP3's. One thing I have found from doing a fair few of these is for everyone to use the same master track and send files that include the silence before and after their take, wherever that may be so they can be simply imported into a new track by whoever is collating the final piece.

I had a dreadful time once trying to get one person's guitar part into a track, couldn't get it to fit no matter how I tried. They sent a 30 second MP3 and it just wouldn't fit and still be in time.

Each part, and I think you meant to say VSTs.

I think that makes sense.  Can you put notes on tracks in Reaper, so that you can state what VSTs were used?

Still.  I'll wait till someone wants me to collab, but Reaper seems like a good choice.

It'd be easier to export the part as a WAV than for the person putting it all together to receive a MIDI of the part. As soon as you use a paid VST that the person doesn't have he's stuck.

I've played about on www.Kompoz.com and thought it had potential for this sort of thing - I think you can create private collaborations if that's what your after. Even if you don't use the site, it's got good info on how to collaborate and how to go about exporting stems and what not.

Yeah but if you send me a midi drum track and I want to tweak it i can just bounce it down with a different VST. Someone can then do the final sound choices once composition is finished.
