Soul covers....

What's Hot
Guys...

Drummer mate if mine is auditioning for a soul band later this week... The initial list of tunes they have suggested aren't particularly inspiring...

So.. Just putting it out there for suggestions / opinions / thoughts...

Do any if you play in soul bands...?

What goes down well...??

Cheers...

  • @MonQuixote, that is a nice little set list you have there.  It's certainly not the usual cover band fare.

Yeah we try and go a bit more modern than the usual Must Hang Sally stuff.

  • When I get around to kickstarting my next cover band doodad, I intend to include a bit of Chic.  Watching them at Glastonbury, and even on X-Factor, made me realise guitar doesn't have to be all lead breaks and power chords.  Making people move is good too. :D

We currently play "Have Love Will Travel" and  " The Hustler" by The Sonics

Also "The Snake" by Al Wilson.

A bit different from your usual fare but always go down well.

Tainted Love is worth a go but can sound completely shit if not done right.

Saw a band called Alison and The Earthquakes just before ecksmass, and they do a whole load of Northern Soul and Motown stuff...very well too.
Not really got much to add, as the song selection wasn't far off what's already been mentioned, but just to say that decent backing vocals and brass are a big plus for a quality Soul vibe...and speaking as someone who plays in a guitar/ guitar/ bass/ drums line-up that covers a few Soul tunes*, I can vouch for that from an unbiased point of view!

(*Land of a Thousand Dances, Shake Your Tail Feather, I Got You (I Feel Good) etc)

Had a soul band for umpteen years, we did these and many more all to good effect (we had brass an 4 part harmonies though).

We included some of the classics because some people don't think you're a soul band if 'Must Hang Sally' isn't there, plus it's still a floor filler....

I'm not shouting, this is copied from an old list of a few years back.

this does remind me of the joke our drummer used to tell (a lot):

What's the last thing a drummer says before he gets fired?
I have an idea for a song...

Great version of The Hustler by Alvin Youngblood Hart, although getting even further away from anything soul.

At Mod events the Imelda May version of Tainted Love is a floor filler. I would hardly think of her as anything to do with Mods but they loves it.

A great song for electric Guitar - and vocal - Piece of my Heart  (version Janis Joplin/ Big brother and The Holding Company)

The Double Stops are a bit of a killer, but a truly emotional song... You will though. need a Les Paul and a Loud Fender amp!

The following songs in my soul/blues band are at the soul end of things all of which go down well:

Dark End of the Street - James Carr (and others)
You Left The Water Running - Dan Penn (and many others!)
Born All Over - OV Wright
I've Been Searching - OV Wright
Blind Crippled and Crazy - OV Wright
Won't Cry No More - Bobby Bland
I'm Not Ashamed - Bobby Bland
Got To Make A Comeback - Eddie Floyd
I'll be True to You - Spencer Wiggins
Tell Me What Have I Done Wrong - James Brown

We used to do OV Wright's "A Nickel And A Nail" (I'm a big OV Wright fan), and we will probably have another go at it. I'd also like to have a crack at Jimmy Lewis's "How Long is a Heartache Supposed to Last", which is one of my favourite soul ballards.

I'm supposed to be learning The New York Dolls version of that. On the plus side it has some regage bits. On the downside its bloody awful.
