New workshop time (nearly there...)

Today I collected more stuff from the old workshop and got the speakers in and wired up. Also I found all the bits of the tablesaw, but I have no idea how to put it back together. There's a full panelsaw kit for it which I never used (actually, I'm not sure I ever used it at all). Time to find a manual and bemoan selling my little Bosch sitesaw.

Also used the extractor while cutting some mounting blocks for the speakers on the bandsaw - it's so quiet. No dust left on the machine, and it even cleans itself once it's done. Marvellous bit of kit.

I'm now looking for a fanless PC with a parallel port to run the CNC machines. Doesn't need to be mad powerful - the CCD/2 runs on a Win2K machine at the mo and the K2 on an XP machine. Anyone got any ideas? Has to be a hardware parallel port as the PCB machine has a dongle that needs direct pin access.

Lots of mini-itx motherboards still come with parallel ports, as quite a lot of industrial applications still use parallel ports. Have a look over on mini-itx.com as I recently bought a motherboard and bits from there that will eventually be going in my latest CNC mill.

    So, I don't want to be bearer of bad news, etc, but;

and this is easy for me to say from the comfort of my armchair ...

being so far away gives me a completely different perspective ...

you've obviously spent a lot of time planning the detail, and so missed the blindingly obvious ...

no-one loves a smartarse (but I'm used to that) ...

something only a good friend would tell you ...

it would be easier for me to say nothing and just let you get on with it ...

you'll only kick yourself later ...

You really should have put the wallpaper up before you'd moved all that industrial stuff in there as it's going to be a lot harder putting it up now, especially behind all the silver tubing stuff.  Top tip now is to get the curtains up before you move any more stuff in there.

    HTH.

    :)

That is the wallpaper. The machines are still at the old workshop.

    Thank you. :)

I figured it was worth doing as properly as possible.

Ta. Still a terrible mess but it's getting there. Need to build the bench next, then a new router table, then a table for the drill press. Then I can start actually making things, or at least trying to remember how to do so.

Which router table are you getting/making?

I will be making my own; the table saw came with extension rails to fit a table to, and I have a bit of kitchen worktop and a router lift that'll go on nicely. That way it's not taking up much space when not in use. Later I will add a fence and T-track.

Thanks @m_c - I did indeed have a look there and now have all the bits for a teeny fanless PC with a parallel port on the way for £385, which is pretty much exactly how much the machine move came in under budget. I got a nice Samsung screen for £60 out of the unwanted stock list at work so that's the workshop PC sorted.

I am going to go and survey my domain for a bit and work out what to do next.

I did some tidying and arranging. The lathe station is in decent order now:

And I arranged most of my timber stock:

Also cleared the area where the bench will go and started sorting bits of poplar for that.

The aircon was meant to arrive today but didn't - when I phoned they said they'd been told by the manufacturer that it'd be a day late, but hadn't thought to contact me. Useless feckers.

Also an order I placed at Charnwood for some dust extraction bits (hoods, adaptors, that sort of thing) still hasn't turned up; I emailed for an update and they've said some of it is out of stock. It wasn't when I placed the order (two weeks ago) and they didn't bother sending an update.

What's with suppliers not doing their jobs properly?

    First build!

I made a little rack for my lathe tools from a bit of scrap spruce and a bit of scrap maple for the brackets. Very ugly. Needs paint. No pictures until it's finished and mounted to an appropriate bit of wall.

Woss the best approach? Keep it flat on shelves?

    Yes, flat on shelves.
Use small pieces of something (I use small pieces of ply) at the ends between them to get some airflow.
Also, if you have any skylights or windows and get direct sunlight on the timber then you might find it gets discoloured.
A curtain or sheet covering the timber may help.

Yeah, standing on end is the riskiest.  I tend to stand on the long thin edge of the plank in some ikea racking.  But having it all stacked and stickered properly is best practice.

Ta chaps. I will get that sorted out..

Today the aircon installer arrived (at the wrong house initially). Two hours later the aircon arrived. Six hours later and it's all installed.

    New pipes!

    http://www.monkeyfx.co.uk/pictures/new_workshop/040117 aircon/pipes.jpg

    The outsidey bit!

    http://www.monkeyfx.co.uk/pictures/new_workshop/040117 aircon/outside.jpg

    The insidey bit!

Now I shall always be both warm and chilly and dehumidified.
