DIY finish on new alder bodies

Got a couple of JM bodies and necks from our own GSP Basses.
I was thinking of trying to put a finish on them myself and was hoping for some advice from the 'Board.
I'm not a very practical person but i'm quite happy to give this a go!
Reading about, it seems tru oil is an option. Do you apply it straight away? Is about 18-20 coats sound normal?

Said bodies and necks!

    Tru Oil is certainly an option, easy to apply and difficult to get wrong, you could try Crimson Guitars Stunning stains and finish with Tru Oil or Crimsons own version of Tru Oil....depends of you want a colour or the natural beauty of the wood, the choice is yours....

    If you look for Crimson Guitars on YouTube there are demos of the stain there also folk on this forum have used it with good results. Ben the Crimson owner has an "interesting" presenting style but its worth watching...

    If you want something a little more hard wearing that Tru oil i can recommend Rustin's Plastic Coat,you can read about using it and the crimson stains here

    Crimson Oil is certainly my choice atm.

    Easy to use, no specialist tools or precautions needed, great results.

    My first (faded denim)

    My second (still faded denim!)

    @TTony ;
    That's really nice Tony!
    How many coats did you have to put on?
    Did you mix the colours to get that?

    @Danchi

    TBH, I didn't count the number of coats, I just kept applying more until the colour was what I wanted.  But I only used a small part of the bottle of stain.

    No mixing - that's the result of the "faded denim" colour.
