Great solos to learn mixing pentatonics

What's Hot
Looking to expand my vocabulary of great solos, especially those that mix major and minor pentatonics. Not after anything involving sweep picking/tapping/plectrum on a drill. ;) Any suggestions gents?

  • The Stumble is another good one. Loads of guitarists have covered that one (including me in one of my home recordings).
I was surprised to discover the version by Steve Hackett, which is great and out of character with what I expected.

    It's not a competition.

  • Thanks. I love Freddie King. I've already got Captons version of Hideaway down, but i'all have a look at the stumble too. My favourite if his is 'going down'. Seriously heavy that one!

Brian Robertson of Thin Lizzy did this a lot as well. Listen to the 2nd solo on "the Cowboy Song" from Live & Dangerous. Also, the 2nd solo once again from the Michael Schenker Group's "Victim of Illusion" Live at The Budokan

  • SRV's Lenny is pretty masterful. And two more Clapton ones for you: Badge has pretty much all of his major/minor toolbox in a nice compact, memorable solo; and if you want something a bit more up to date, chase down his live cover of Don't Think Twice It's Alright from the Dylan 30th anniversary concert.

One of my favourite pieces of EC's playing - he was on exceptional form on that show.

  • Thanks guys. I've kind of rediscovered Clapton recently, and really enjoying the work in cream, blind faith and especially the Derek and the Dominoes live at filmour east album

Pretty much any Eric Johnson solo too, Cliffs of Dover etc, it'll certainly be a bit more challenging than Clapton et al

Call me the breeze - lynyrd skynyrd. A lot of clever mixing in those lead lines.

  • @sweepy thanks, but Eric Johnson is significantly above my skill level right now.

@Maynehead thanks for the suggestion. I love a bit of skynard.
