Jamiroquai

Listened to the first album for the first time in years today. Just fantastic. Basslines, superb guitar and an overall funky vibe. I know that Jay Kay can divide opinion but the music speaks for itself. Excellent.

    Music is awesome

The producer needs credit too, it all sounds amazing!

Love em, their albums are a foundation course in funky bass playing.
In time I've come to appreciate the drumming and great songs too. Check out the recentish live gig at the Jazz Cafe in Camden, JK can sing far better than you might realise!

Is that the 2006 one? Just watching it now, it's ace!

Do they have more than one album? Or for that matter, more than one song?

  • Lol!!!

Actually I really like Jamiroquai when I'm in the right mood! :)

  • @cruxiform thats it : )

  • I found they definitely lost a real sense of direction/identity after Stuart Zender quit and have since gradually devolved from a jazz-funk band fronted by Jay Kay into funk-tinged disco by Jay Kay & an almost interchangeable backing band.

  • It was one of those albums everyone had. Cars would drive past with it blaring out and it'd be on in pubs etc. I had all the singles with the remixes and long versions. Noice.

  • Its a great album. Unfortunately everything else that followed  from JK was in it's shadow and never bettered.

  • This thread has reminded me to check out some Jamiroquai music again. Great stuff.

Years back I played Cosmic Girl and Virtual Insanity in a covers band. I recall that Virtual Insanity was quite a challenge.

    It's not a competition.

Great band, I must have most of their albums. Liked them best with Zender

  • Remember seeing them in the studio on a TV show in the '90s - Jay Kay doesn't play any instruments but was able to sing every part he wanted someone to play.

He might not be the most likeable person in music - but he's undeniably talented.

  • A gateway drug to real funk & jazz for me. Love a bit of jamiroquai, and zender is a monster.

It was a stonking great album. Did Zender actually play on any of the subsequent releases? I do know that he popped up on this "hidden gem" / "guilty pleasure".

  • The production on Jamiroquai recordings is horrid, over squished compression overload. Yak.

  • Is that why it all sounds the same?

  • The early albums are a 'must have' for any bassist. Anything up to (and including) synkronized I'd say.

First big band I ever saw live too!

  • Many years ago a function band I was in had Derrick McIntyre do a dep on bass. That was a seriously funky gig.

    It's not a competition.

  • Not a big fan but the current guitarist lives down the road from me. :)
