Zilla Cabs: 1 x 12 - Any Thoughts On Which Model ?

WazmeisterWazmeister Frets: 9534
Need a cab to match the Redplate head, and had some dialogue today with Paul at Zilla.

Very impressed thus far; excellent service and communications.

Just unsure which 1x12 to get ?

Anyone tried the Fatbaby, Ported, Mini Modern ?

I personally would go for a ported but we have quite different tonal tastes. Really do love the 2x12 fatboy I got from @photek. Always been a v30 fan but the creambacks have been a bit of a gamechanger for me last year.

Plus Paul at Zilla is a great guy to deal with, bought from him directly too.

I recall a thread where you talked about "bloom", and without knowing much about Redplate, is that a low end thump or something else?

I'm quite shocked at how much low end I get with the back open and the cab off the floor with a Fatboy.

I have a Fat Baby along with a Victory V40.  It's great but pretty large for a 1x12 (20kg and very wide).

It does sound good and pretty happy with it.  Could prob fiT 2x10 speakers inside the cab.

I've got a Fatbaby, as people are saying it is quite large for 1x12, here's a pic next to my old Marshall 4x12 https://imgur.com/a/7giWK

I like mine plenty of low end response and it's built like a tank.

Its worth getting the three piece back so you can switch from open to closed just to keep options available down the line.

This. I bought a custom sized 1x12 when I had a Victory head (wanted something deeper and wider than the victory cabs) and got a 3 piece back for this reason. They are really solid, so when closed, can punch bass frequencies +++. Open it up and you get a more full, rounded bluesy tone.

Pic here with the v40 (both moved on now)

I'm planning to get a Zilla to go with my Victory V40. I really can't decide whether to go 1x12 (in which case I'd get a custom size similar to @mattdavis) or vertical 2x12 (in which case I'd go for the Modern, rotated to be vertical). Either way I'd get the 3-piece back.

And I might well "borrow" the colour scheme from @DanR's cab:

How do I decide?  Mostly playing bluesy stuff and Americana, nothing very heavy.

Comes down mainly to practicality. If you can lug a 2x12 around, the extra spread of the sound is great. I down graded from a studio pro 2x12 as it was just easier.

I'm in exactly the same place mate, and have had some dialogue with Paul at Zilla, who has been extremely helpful.

I've been thinking of a FatBaby but may yet order a 1x12 compact... just in terms of weight...

Ported 1x12 here with EVM 12L Classic. Use it with both my Cornford Roadhouse and Victory Kraken. Highly recommended!

How much weight difference is there between a Fatbaby and a compact?

In all honesty I'd take Paul's advice, just tell him what you want it to do and he'd recommend the best way.

Ive a couple off him and I've never been disappointed in what I've ended up with.

Using a Mini Modern open backed with EVM12-L - amp is a Ceriatone Bluesmaster OTS - cab sounds huge & plenty of bottom end.
    Seemed like a good idea.....
