La Grange, Billy ... and .007 gauge strings!

I know this has come up before, but I loved this vid.  Your brain tell you that it's so wrong to be able to get such a thick tone from such ridiculously light gauge strings, but your ears don't lie.... straight from the man himself.

I started out with nothing..... but I've still got most of it left (Seasick Steve)

  • In the late 70s when I learned to play guitar Rotosound made some crazy gauges. Usually I'd play 008 gauge on a Gibson scale guitar, but on one occasion I found a set of 006s and popped them on just before a practice session. Of course they were just ridiculous - almost uncontrollable - and I had no real idea about neck relief or truss rods then, so the whole thing was a rattly mess due to the already as-low-as-I-can-go action to try to help me play as fast as possible.

They didn't stay on very long, and I quickly went back to 008 gauge Fender Rock'n'rolls, which at that time were a LOT better than Rotosounds. Eventually I moved to 10s where I've stuck pretty much ever since.

I've played 11s on Gibsons and 10-52s on Fenders for as long as I can remember but picked up a Washburn strung with 9s recently. I was so much easier to play and sounded great, I might have to have a sting gauge re-think.

Give anything enough gain and it'll sound fat.

Doens't he have everything EQd to match his Les Paul's output and tonality? Either way it sound great.

Brian May is another for super-light strings. 8's on a 24" scale.

  • Doesn't it just make you wanna pick up a Les Paul and jam out?
