Whilst I find it to be a dark amp anyway with a need for a high tone setting I have realised that the background hiss/hum is increased not so much by the vol on either channel but especially by the Tone knob ; I.E. - turn up the tone and you get a dramatic increase in the background hiss .........normal or something wrong ( it has always done this ) ???

    Yes, that's completely normal for any of the 5*3 circuits.

    Of course, should you feel that it's excessive then consult with the manufacturer.

    @RiftAmps  - thanks,I was sure that it was characteristic of the circuit but it is a question of degree ........to me it seems quite intrusive and very noticeable at volume but I might seem a bit precious about it  .......guess I need to listen to another one and compare

    I'll dial that setting in on mine sometime this weekend and get back to you. Mind you though I do have bad ground loops in my house so it may hum anyway

    Is it a sudden jump in hiss, maybe with a slight "clunk" ? If so could be parasitic oscillation. That would need the ministrations of a good tech.

    Maybe a daft question but I take it your guitar is plugged in it when you do this? Does it hiss / hum when the guitar is not plugged in etc.

    No -it will do it plugged or unplugged exactly the same as soon as switched on or when warm -you can dial it away by reducing tone to 1 or 2 but I find it a very dark amp so want to crank the tone even with a tele

    Yes I have the tone up high too. I can't say I've ever noticed a really loud hum though. Some hum but not massively annoying

    Yeah I get some hiss more than hum. More when using fx like overdrive/distortion and some modulation fx. But not noticeable when playing and not over bearing either. Sounds like it'll be worth checking it out with an amp tech to me

    @Dominic ;

    Do you have the VAC on yours? If I have the amp running wide open with VAC off, and I use my normal settings with a Tele (bright input 1, tone at 9, volume at 7), it sounds incredible first and foremost, but yes, there is also an audible hiss.. although not something I would consider intrusive or problematic for recording or gigging. Playing alone in the house I guess it could be a bit annoying.
    if you have VAC, you'll find that as well as attenuating the volume of your signal, it'll also of course attenuate the noise floor so the hiss will seem much less apparent with VAC bringing the power down.
    Cheers

    Yes ,got VAC but never use it .........very underwhelmed by it in fact, does nothing until it's wound back 25% and then it starts to attenuate very quickly and unevenly ...............maybe I expect the precision of the Tone King Iron Man which is superb.

  • @Dominic ;, I've just tried mine with an Aracom attenuator - if I set the attenuator so that it's bedroom practice level and wind the treble and volume knobs to 9 I don't get intrusive hiss.

    If I open up the attenuator a little so that the playing volume is most definitely anti-social for home use, then I can hear hiss at the same control settings, but I found it not intrusive and the volume of the amp at those settings was *way* louder than the hiss.

    It's hardly a scientific experiment but it sounds like your might be worth having a tech look at it.

    OH sure .......I play with volume at about 25 % unattenuated and that is fairly loud ( have a soundproofed rehearsal room in a garage ) the guitar sound is certainly louder than the hiss because it drowns it out but between songs etc it is very noticeable
    think I may get it checked out
